Sample Pack Wednesday: themoreittakesthepainaway (industrial sample pack)

This Sample Pack consists of sounds, artwork, and external web page created by Summer Bridge scholar Kashaun McGhee, a multi-instrumentalist whose solo music project aweirdexperiment breaks down the barriers of genre. This pack was created in Soundtrap, a free web-based DAW featured in our Toolbox.

The pack is inspired by industrial and hardcore punk and metal. I was listening to bands like Vein.fm and Code Orange and was really inspired by how they seemlessly blended 90s industrial and grunge with hardcore, metal, and EDM. The first four sounds (Engine, Laced Phased, Screech, Shimmer) are made with paper and cloth from my work space, further manipulated with effects such as delay, fuzz, overdrive, rotary, etc.

The remaining five (Tunnel Vision, Weaponized, Chlorine, Helicopter in a Wind Tunnel, Hellish Drone) are forms of MIDI I manipulated with effects in a similar nature. Weaponized is three combined kicks, edited and merged together before edited even further.

Every sample got its name either by sounding similar to what it's named or an overt pop-culture reference, for example Chlorine is based and named off of the Twenty One Pilots song of the same name, and Shimmer gets its name from the aliens in the film, Arrival.

The pack's name, The More It Takes The Pain Away (stylized as themoreittakesthepainaway), is a lyric taken directly from the Vein.fm song, "20 seconds: 20 hours".
