3 Things to Know Before Using Sample Stitch

Sample Stitch is an online web browser application that allows you to reconstruct samples from popular producers J Dilla, Kanye West, and 9th Wonder’s beats.

The web browser app was developed by Matthew Daniels—founder of visual journalism publication, The Pudding, and visual storytelling agency, Polygraph. Daniels launched Sample Stitch in January 2015 with the hopes that more people will learn to understand the process of composing music with a bunch of millisecond chopped up samples. There’s no doubt that sampling is an art form within itself, you can get as creative as you want whether it be a sound you hear while walking down the street or a chord from your favorite song.

If you’re the type of person who enjoys playing around with samples just for fun, then Sample Stitch is perfect for you! Here’s why:

1. Accessible & easy-to-use

Sample Stitch is accessible and easy-to-use because all you need is WiFi and access to the Internet. There’s no pressure to create a beat because you’re limited to a 4 bar loop. However, that’s not to say you can’t make something amazing in the web browser app, in fact, you’ll most likely get inspired to make your own beat in a DAW that’ll allow you to compose the way you want. To get started on using Sample Stitch, you can press any key, including the space bar, on your computer keyboard.

2. You’ve Got Options

Sample Stitch provides you with three samples, each giving a different feel. If you’re looking for a more boom-bap style, “Don’t Cry” from J Dilla’s legendary Donuts’ album might be the right sample for you. If you want something more soulful, check out “Otis” by Kanye West. And if you’re interested in something more upbeat, then 9th Wonder’s “IMPRESSKNOWSSOUL!!!!” is what you need.

3. Fun and Educational

In addition to the samples provided, Sample Stitch’s creator Matthew Daniels also shares his reasoning for choosing the samples he chose and the science behind them. You almost certainly fall into a rabbit hole of sampling tutorials and how-to videos.
