NYMMEP Explore the Beat Wrap-up: Find the Beat
Explore the Beat is part of New York Music Month Extended Play, an initiative of the Mayor’s Office of Media and Entertainment.
For our second beat making workshop, we had Samuel Lee, aka SammAyOnTheBeat, show us the foundations of drum programming, exploring the functions of the step sequencer, available in most DAWs.
A Recap
Introduction to Patterns Beatmaker in Soundtrap
We first learned how to add Patterns Beatmaker within the DAW and how it functions. SammAyOnTheBeat showed us how to sequence drums, adding/removing sounds and switching presets.
Patterns Beatmaker: How to Create a Pattern
SammAyOnTheBeat demonstrated how to create a 16 bar pattern using one of the various drum kits offered in Soundtrap. We learned how to use the Piano Roll feature to help give our patterns movement and life. We also explored how to use Effects to bring out the character of our drums.
Adding Loops with the Elevated Sounds Sample Pack
We learned how to import 3rd party files into our DAW of choice. SammAyOnTheBeat then added a loop from his Elevated Sounds Sample Pack to demonstrate.

Vocabulary
Drum Sequencer refers to a digital emulator of a Drum Machine that was used to program digital and percussion sounds using a hardware device that featured velocity sensitive pads, knobs, faders and buttons. Most DAWs have a built in Drum Sequencer that you can use to emulate these functions to create your own patterns.
