Finding your voice. Shaping the story. Reaching an audience.
Building Beats’ podcast workshops introduce students to podcasting as a creative, technical, and storytelling practice—and as an entry point into careers in media, communications, and creative industries. Through hands-on instruction, students learn how to develop ideas, conduct interviews, record and edit audio, and share stories that matter to them and their communities.
Designed for both in-person and remote learning environments, these workshops give students the tools, time, and support to build real-world media skills while exploring how their voices can translate into creative futures.
-
In our podcast workshops, students:
Learn the fundamentals of podcast production, including ideation, interviewing, scripting, recording, editing, and audio engineering
Develop storytelling and critical listening skills through hands-on audio projects
Build technical fluency using accessible, industry-relevant audio tools
Practice communication, collaboration, and interviewing techniques
Gain confidence by producing and sharing original podcast episodes
Every podcast workshop centers voice, storytelling, and skill-building—helping students see themselves not just as listeners, but as creators and communicators.
-
Podcast workshops are designed for school-aged youth and are adapted by age, setting, and student experience level. No prior media, audio, or technology experience is required. Instruction is scaffolded to support a wide range of skill levels, making workshops accessible to beginners while allowing more experienced students to deepen their practice.
These workshops are well suited for schools and organizations seeking engaging, literacy-rich, and media-focused programming.
-
Podcast workshops can be delivered in person or remotely and are offered in a variety of formats, including:
In-school programming
After-school or extended-day programs
Community center and youth organization programming
Residencies and short-term masterclasses
Summer and enrichment programs
Programming is flexible and designed to integrate into existing schedules and program structures.
-
A podcast residency is structured to guide students from idea to finished episode. Residencies typically include:
Introduction to podcasting tools and audio basics
Brainstorming topics and planning stories
Interview practice and field recording exercises
Scriptwriting, editing, and mixing
Publishing, sharing, and reflecting on student work
Residencies often culminate in a listening session, showcase, or release of student-produced podcast episodes.
-
We aim to make podcast workshops as accessible and easy to implement as possible.
Students use browser-based audio production tools provided by Building Beats to record, edit, and produce original podcasts. The tools we use are:
Easy to learn for beginners
Appropriate for school and youth program settings
Transferable to future creative, media, and technical learning
We ask that partner sites have access to the following equipment, if possible:
A computer, Chromebook, tablet, or smartphone with reliable internet access
Google Chrome (our recommended browser for optimal performance)
Headphones for each student
Zoom or Google Meet (for remote programming only)
If your site does not currently have this equipment available, Building Beats can support equipment rental or purchasing options. Our team will work with you to develop a plan that fits your program’s needs and budget.
-
Podcast workshops support key outcomes many schools and youth-serving organizations prioritize, including:
Literacy, communication, and storytelling skills
Digital media and technology literacy
Student engagement, voice, and confidence-building
Collaboration, interviewing, and critical thinking
If a school or program has a specific instructional goal, theme, or youth development priority, our team can adapt the curriculum accordingly. Custom curriculum packages are available to ensure alignment with site-specific needs and objectives.
