CareerCLUE - Summer 2019
In the Summer of 2019, Building Beats taught its first CareerCLUE cohort of high school students from Bronx Collegiate Academy and Bronx High School of Business the foundations of music production and music business.
Led by Workshop Leaders Marcus Rosario and Christian Vargas, alongside Dreamyard’s Fatima Dizon and DOE schoolteacher Caroline Cohen, students learned about creative career pathways connected to music and developed critical skills for the 21st century all while receiving academic credit and a stipend.
Students learned about the history and cultural impact of jazz in Harlem.
Students got to learn the history and art form of DJ’ing with respect to turntablism, learning basic scratches and how to play vinyl records.
Students connected with record label head, DJ and producer Riobamba about her creative career and shared personal experiences and advice about navigating the music and creative industries.
Students connected and learned about audio production and sound design from WNYC’s award-winning sound designer Jeremy S. Bloom.
Students listening to WNYC host and multidisciplinary artist Helga Davis talk about her career as a performer and voice-over artist.

Students visited Spotify’s NYC headquarters to learn about creative careers within Spotify, from coding and marketing to artist relations.
