Our Vision
We envision a world where any individual, regardless of their origin, can pursue their passion and build a career out of it. To realize this vision, we empower individuals and help them become self‑sufficient, creative producers that will benefit their community while leading personally fulfilling lives.
Our Story
Since 2013, Building Beats has developed and expanded DJ, Music Production and Podcasting programs, instilling entrepreneurship, leadership, and life skills in New York City’s low-income and minority youth. With a strong belief in activating students’ passion for music as a pathway to build entrepreneurial skills, we provide students with the structure, tools, and knowledge necessary to become self-directed, creative producers who harness their creative potential to benefit their community.
Beginning as a small cohort of programs located in communities in the Bronx and Manhattan, Building Beats has since implemented over 6,000 hours of in-school and after-school workshops in Djing, Music Production and Podcasting throughout the greater NYC area. Since 2020, we’ve expanded to serve L.A. as well. We’ve taught in over 150 locations to more than 8,000 youth in after-school, unhoused youth programs, juvenile justice and restorative justice centers schools and community centers.
Our Values
Learning:
Learning is one of the core values within Building Beats. Not only are we an education organization, but we are also a learning organization. To become better teachers, we must learn to embrace learning in ourselves to understand how we help our students embrace learning.
We prioritize lifelong learning and work to create an environment where every student may flourish. There is an opportunity to learn everywhere, not just in the classroom, and we strive to make learning accessible to our students no matter where they're at.
Leadership:
To be impactful members of any community requires leadership. This is why it is one of our Core Values. We expect every student, volunteer, and staff member to become leaders in all their groups and amongst their peers.
Leadership has many definitions and different times call for different leadership styles. We don't define leadership in one certain way but a few key ingredients include bravery, minimal ego, proactive and self-management, high self-awareness, the ability to serve for the greater good, being flexible and compromising to get things done, humble and challenges their own arrogance.
Our goal is to create an environment where leaders set an example for others to follow and encourage others to realize their greatest potential.
Creativity:
In our opinion, creativity is crucial for promoting growth and innovation. To advance our communities, we look for students, staff and volunteers who exhibit creative thinking and creative prowess.
Those who are willing to put their work out into the world even though it may not be a complete product. Those who are able to think beyond their comfort zones to create things they may never have imagined possible.
Music is just one facet of creativity and creativity as a Core Value means we embrace those who think outside the box. To build a bright and positive future for all requires envisioning new things and ways of doing that can benefit the greater good. Those who are most creative will have the highest chance of succeeding.
Community:
We are a community organization and our work is first and foremost a means to improve our neighbors, peers, and local communities. This means we cherish those with a similar a mindset to serve their communities.
Having community values means we prioritize the we, instead of the me. We keep in mind how our work may benefit (or even harm) our community before we implement something.
We understand the value of establishing and upholding solid relationships, both within our organization and with our student and partners. We think that by developing a feeling of community, good things come to all affected, not just the few.
Techno-resilience:
We understand the value of being able to change with the rapidly evolving society. Technology has changed our lives, sometimes for the better, and sometimes for the worst. We embrace change and know technological progress is inevitable, but it is up to us to make sure it's designed and used properly to benefit our communities and students.
We want to create a world that can swiftly adopt new technologies and be resilient in the face of technological challenges.
Systems thinking:
For us to make a true impact in our communities, we have to know the current systems in place and how we can apply the right leverage points to create positive change. We think it's critical to keep the broad picture in mind and comprehend the connections between the various components of our communities and its stakeholders.
In order to reach more sensible and long-lasting decisions, we try to approach issues and decision-making with a systems-thinking perspective. This helps us be aware of interconnecting parts, feedback loops, unintended consequences, and 2nd and 3rd order effects that come from systems change.
